“I am thrilled to announce my ownership role in the first Canadian WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo,” Williams said in a statement. “This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes. I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity. I am excited to partner with Larry and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy.”

Ironically enough, Williams made her professional tennis debut in Canada back in 1995. Now, entering the ownership ground, she is the greatest women’s tennis player. Her accolades are unmatched, as Williams has 23 Grand Slam singles titles to her resume. Williams brings more than just her name to the Tempo—she brings a vision.

Teresa Resch, President of the Tempo Basketball Club, couldn’t quell her excitement.

“Serena is a champion,” Resch said. “She’s the greatest athlete of all time, and her impact on this team and this country is going to be incredible. She’s set the bar for women in sport, business, and the world—and her commitment to using that success to create opportunities for other women is inspiring. We’re thrilled to be marking the lead-up to International Women’s Day with this announcement.”

Williams will also play an important part in the creative process with the team, from jersey designs to merchandise collaborations. Williams will have an active role in shaping the Tempo’s identity.

Larry Tanenbaum, Chairman of Kilmer Sports Ventures and co-owner of the Tempo, echoed Resch’s sentiments.

“Serena Williams is an icon, a role model, and a force for change in the world. She’s earned every bit of her incredible success with hard work, tenacity, and determination in the face of countless challenges. She exemplifies the very best of what the Tempo stand for—we couldn’t be more honored to have Serena in our court.”

The WNBA has gained a lot of momentum. There has been record-breaking viewership, a lot of new blood, and more growing investments in women’s basketball. Adding a superstar athlete such as Williams to the Tempo only continues to amplify the league’s momentum.

As the Tempo prepare to kick off their inaugural season in 2026, the team is building a legacy to transcend basketball. The Toronto Tempo are poised to make history. Having Williams aboard will inspire a new generation of athletes following in her footsteps.
