Sonia Citron Brings a New Era for the Washington Mystics
Sonia Citron fits the Washington Mystics plan to a tee.
When franchises draft players, they don’t only think about the present times, they think about the future. That’s exactly what the Washington Mystics did when they took Sonia Citron with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft.
Being selected right after Paige Bueckers and Doinique Malonga, is some what of a badge of honor for most atheltes. However, don’t let the two’s selection take away from Citron’s selection. On day one, the Mystics might’ve landed the most complete player in the class.
The game of Citron isn’t flashy. She’s fundamental. She’s fluid, and most importantly, she’s fearless.
Learning from the Best, Leading from Day One
From jump street, Citron steps into a Mystics roster that’s rebuilding but they are full of a boatload of potential.
However, Citron will be granted with Brittney Sykes and Aaliyah Edwards to help show her the ropes of the WNBA. Additionally adding Shakira Austin to the fold, Citron won’t have to carry the weight alone. But don’t get it twisted — she’s not here just to observe.
Eventually Citron will start to take the reins.
At 6’1”, Citron’s built for both backcourt and wing assignments. In the modern WNBA, Citron will be playing at the two position, sliding over to the 3 when needed, and always taking the toughest defensive matchup.
As a mismatch hunter and a matchup nightmare, her skill set and versatility are exactly what the Mystics need to get back to the top of the East.
Game Speaks Louder Than Words
Citron didn’t just have a good college run — she dominated her time at Notre Dame.
A 2025 AP All-America Honorable Mention and Cheryl Miller Award finalist, she averaged 14.1 points, 5.4 boards, and 2.7 dimes a night. And those numbers don’t even tell the full story.
She locks in defensively, rebounds out of position, and can guard 1 through 3 without blinking. That All-ACC First Team and All-Defensive Team résumé? Not fluff. That’s facts.
She’s smooth off the bounce, strong at the rim, and can hit open jumpers with confidence. She doesn’t need the ball to change a game, but give her the rock — and watch what happens.
The Fit Is Clear — and So Is the Mission
As the Mystics transition into a new era, Citron fits their blueprint.
The team has a young core, defined roles, and the flexibility to grow together. Citron will prove as the glue piece that will connect the dots between the team.
The orgainzation in D.C. loves her versatility and the calm intensity she brings to the game. In a league that demands adaptability, Citron’s plug-and-play ability gives Washington breathing room. She can start. She can rotate. She can close games.
And she’s just getting started.
“I’m grateful to be here. I’ve watched this team grow and fight, and I’m excited to be a part of that. I want to learn, I want to win, and I want to bring everything I’ve got to D.C” said citron.
Another missing piece filled
Citron isn’t here to be the sidekick. She’s here to grow within the system. She’s here to grow next to Edwards. Learn from Sykes and carve her own lane in a league that rewards the ones who never stop grinding.
Washington didn’t just get a player. They got a tone-setter.
And Sonia Citron’s about to turn up the volume.
