Can the Indiana Fever Win It All in 2025?!?!
Introduction
The Indiana Fever are gearing up for a championship run in 2025. The moves the front office made this offseason send a clear message to everyone in the organization: they are in win-now mode.
The Fever have transformed their roster. They added several different WNBA champions to their team.
The list of names added this offseason was nothing short of surprising. The Fever brought in crucial players who will play big roles for this team, including WNBA champions Natasha Howard, DeWanna Bonner, and Sydney Colson. Pairing these seasoned veterans with a budding superstar in Caitlin Clark makes this team a serious title contender. Add in the fact that the core of this team is still relatively young. Kelsey Mitchell is still in her 20s. Meanwhile, Aliyah Boston, their 23-year-old center, is budding into a prolific WNBA player. They might be a dark horse, but Indiana is now a serious title contender.
Let’s break down why the Fever’s free agency moves and Clark’s continued rise make them a team to watch in 2025.
Caitlin Clark’s Impact: The Franchise Cornerstone
Superstars carry teams to championships. The Fever’s head of the snake is their point guard, Caitlin Clark. The expectations that people have for Clark are through the roof. Yes, it is because she is supremely and immensely talented. To start, Clark’s rookie season in 2024 was nothing short of spectacular. From her first season alone, she dominated the competition from the point guard position and quickly established herself as one of the league’s five best players.
Caitlin Clark 2024 Accolades Included:
• WNBA Rookie of the Year and All-WNBA First Team honors
• AP Female Athlete of the Year and TIME’s Athlete of the Year
• WNBA record for most points by a point guard in a season
• Most assists and double-doubles by a rookie guard
• Breaking the single-game & single-season assists record
• First rookie in WNBA history with multiple triple-doubles
Clark is not only the face of the franchise, but she’s also one of the biggest names in sports. The fact she is so young and already has so much to her game is a scary thought. Most second-year players are not expected to lead their teams to championships. With Clark, and like most of everything she does, she is the exception. Clark’s ability to score the basketball at an elite level, added with her playmaking and leadership, has already transformed Indiana into a WNBA powerhouse.
Kelsey Mitchell’s Role in Indiana’s Championship Aspirations
If Caitlin Clark is the engine of the Indiana Fever’s offense, then Kelsey Mitchell is its turbocharge. When the Fever’s offense is clicking on all cylinders, Mitchell provides the team with another gear. Mitchell gives the team extra speed with her lightning-fast quickness. She also gives them great efficiency. This season, Mitchell made her second straight All-Star game and shot a career-best, almost reaching 50/40/90 shooting splits.
Mitchell’s shooting stats for the 2024 season:
•46% FG
•40% from three-point range
•83.2% from the free-throw line
The biggest priority for the Indiana Fever was to make sure they kept Mitchell in the fray. They accomplished that by signing her to a one-year deal on a supermax contract.
Clark definitely controls the tempo and initiates the offense, but Mitchell is the person who makes the offense that much deadlier. Now that the Fever will once again have one of the best backcourts in the league, year two will be about how much more they can grow together.
This season, the two might make the leap from the best backcourt to one of, if not the, WNBA’s most dangerous duos.
The Game-Changing Additions of Natasha Howard & DeWanna Bonner
Newly hired President and General Manager of the Fever, Kelly Krauskopf, knew that the Indiana Fever had a few concerns they needed to address outside of re-signing Mitchell. In order to take the next step, Indiana needed to add more defense to somewhat balance out their roster.
Krauskopf did just that—and in a prolific way. To push Indiana toward contention, she brought in two players who will help bolster the team’s defense: Natasha Howard and DeWanna Bonner.
Natasha Howard, in her own right, is a former WNBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time champion. As one of the elite forwards in the game, she has the ability to guard any position on the floor. Last season, while playing for the Dallas Wings, Howard broke her foot but came back healthy and still put up great numbers. She averaged nearly 18 points per game and shot 45% from the floor.
Bonner, on the other hand, is a proven winner. She is a six-time WNBA All-Star and a two-time champion. She brings veteran leadership and a much-needed clutch scoring punch for Indiana. At 6’4”, she gives the Fever a lot of lineup versatility. Indiana can play small and still be effective by putting Bonner at either forward position.
Krauskopf didn’t stop with the additions of Bonner and Howard. She also brought in Sydney Colson from the Las Vegas Aces. A two-time champion, Colson will be an ideal fit as the backup point guard. Not only will she provide valuable depth at the guard position, but she is also someone who has delivered in high-pressure situations.
When it comes to making deep playoff runs, having a myriad of players who can contribute in any situation is crucial. All three of these veterans will play a key role in Indiana’s championship aspirations.
The Road to A Championship
The Fever have one of the deepest and most complete rosters in the WNBA. They have a superstar talent in Caitlin Clark. They have an elite backcourt formed with Kelsey Mitchell. They have veteran leadership provided by Natasha Howard, DeWanna Bonner, and Sydney Colson. They also have a rising star in their talented center, Aliyah Boston. Additionally, they have a strong bench led by Lexie Hull and Sophie Cunningham.
This team has the perfect balance of youth and experience, and they are built to win now.
Although the road will be tough with powerhouse teams such as the Minnesota Lynx, New York Liberty, and Las Vegas Aces, the Fever have a legitimate chance to defeat them all. This season presents as good an opportunity as any to win a ring, and Indiana has a real shot at capturing its first WNBA title since 2012.
