Clark’s Record Night and Mitchell’s Late Surge Propel Fever Past Wings in Thriller

By D’Joumbarey A. Moreau

Caitlin Clark put on another show, leading the Indiana Fever to a 100-93 victory over the Dallas Wings in Arlington, Texas. Clark’s 28 points and 12 assists propelled Indiana to a win, despite Arike Ogunbowale’s record-tying performance from beyond the arc.

Ogunbowale lit up the scoreboard with nine 3-pointers, matching a WNBA record shared by Kelsey Mitchell and Jewell Loyd. She finished with 34 points, narrowly missing out on setting a new benchmark as the Wings fell short. “I salute people like Arike because off the court, we’re really great friends,” Mitchell said, reflecting on the battle.

Mitchell led all scorers with 36 points, including a clutch 3-pointer that gave Indiana a four-point cushion with under two minutes left. Clark and Mitchell were a dynamic duo, combining for 10 of Indiana’s 15 three-pointers, shooting an impressive 50% from deep. “When you have two guards making plays like that, it’s tough for the other team to decide what to take away,” Clark noted, highlighting their on-court chemistry.

The Fever, now 17-16, have won six of their last seven games since the Olympic break, climbing above .500 for the first time with Clark at the helm. Indiana’s next challenge is a six-game homestand, starting against the Los Angeles Sparks, while the Wings, who are still battling for a playoff spot, will face the Fever again on September 15.

Despite the loss, the Wings had standout performances from Satou Sabally, who scored 25 points, and Natasha Howard, who added 18 points and nine assists. Ogunbowale’s 34 points were her sixth 30-point game of the season, but Dallas couldn’t overcome Indiana’s late surge.

Indiana’s dominant fourth quarter, where they shot 9-13 from the field and 5-8 from three, sealed the deal. Dallas’ defense faltered, allowing the Fever to erase their lead and secure the win. Coach Christie Sides praised her team’s resilience, saying, “We just keep talking about momentum, keeping our foot on the gas.”

With the Fever solidly in the playoff mix, Clark continues to make history, adding to her Rookie of the Year campaign. Meanwhile, Dallas hopes to rebound quickly as they conclude their homestand against the Washington Mystics.
