Las Vegas Aces Tap Larry Lewis: Experiences Join the Championship Bench

Larry Lewis Joins Las Vegas Aces as Assistant Coach, Bringing Decades of Experience to the Bench

LAS VEGAS (Dec. 13, 2024)—The Las Vegas Aces continue to strengthen their championship-winning foundation with the addition of Larry Lewis as an assistant coach. The hiring was announced today by Aces head coach Becky Hammon, who emphasized the immense value Lewis will bring to the team.

“I’m thrilled to add coach Lewis to our group,” Hammon shared. “The depth of character and basketball knowledge he brings is invaluable to the system and culture we’ve built. Larry has a wealth of experience from the NBA, G-League, NCAA, and nearly two decades as a professional player. His track record in player development is exceptional and will be a significant asset as we pursue another championship.”

Lewis echoed Hammon’s enthusiasm, highlighting the unique cultural identity that the Aces have cultivated.

“It’s exciting to be joining the Aces because there’s a passion behind the team that is cultural,” Lewis said. “Holding onto that culture is no small feat, and it’s one of the beautiful aspects of this team. Having played and coached at various levels, I know how difficult it is to bring a group together under a high standard of culture. The Aces have that here—it’s something to be valued, cherished, and preserved.”

A Proven Track Record of Success

Lewis comes to Las Vegas after five successful seasons as an assistant coach at the University of California, Santa Barbara. During his tenure, the Gauchos clinched Big West Tournament titles in 2021 and 2023, earning NCAA Tournament berths in both seasons.

Before UCSB, Lewis made his mark in the NBA and G-League, serving as an assistant coach and director of player development for the Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Lakers. With the Lakers, he spent three additional seasons coaching their G-League affiliate, the Los Angeles D-Fenders (now the South Bay Lakers). His expertise helped guide the D-Fenders to a league-best 38-12 record and a Western Conference Championship in 2012, earning him a spot as an assistant coach for the G-League Select Team that same year.

A Global Perspective

Lewis’s basketball journey began as a collegiate athlete at Morehouse College before launching a professional career that spanned the globe. From the CBA and USBL in the United States to stints in Argentina, Cyprus, the Dominican Republic, Great Britain, Japan, and Spain, his playing experience is as diverse as it is extensive. He also represented Team USA at the 1995 Pan American Games, earning a silver medal in Argentina.

Building on the Aces’ Legacy

With Lewis on the bench, the Las Vegas Aces are poised to continue their run of excellence, leaning on his decades of experience and proven ability to develop players and sustain winning cultures. As the Aces aim for another WNBA title, Lewis’s arrival further solidifies their reputation as a team built on passion, dedication, and an unrelenting drive for greatness.
